What ribbon should I use for my DIY project

What size ribbon should I use on my project?  Have you ever really given this a thought?   More than likely you just grabbed the closest thing in your ribbon stash or something you thought would compliment your project.  In reality there are some guidelines when using ribbon on your crafting projects. 

What I LOVE about art, crafting and creating is there are really no “rules” but knowing the guidelines might inspire you to create out of the box!   So below I have listed for you common ribbon and trim sizes and the coordinating “primary” or “usual” use.   

The information below will help guide you in your selection of ribbon and trim for your next crafting project and make it easy for you to select the perfect size you need for whatever DIY project you decide to create!   

  • Linen Thread
    • Primary use is to give a natural touch to a project. 
    • Fine enough for needle and buttons
    • Delicate enough for fine bows
  • Metallic Thread
    • Primary use is to give an added shiny accent to projects. 
  • 1/16” Natures Twine/Bakers Twine
    • Trim of this kind is primarily used for tags, trimming, tying, jewelry.
    • Can also be used decoratively wrapped around candles or vases for home décor. (do not burn candle with twine wrapped around it, very flammable)
    • Can also be used as an accent on a handmade card or scrapbook page.
  • Ribbon 1/8″- 1/4″
    • Ribbons of these widths are primarily used for card embellishing and scrapbooking, banners.
    • Meant to accent a project. 
    • Can also be used for gift tags and small gifts  
  • Ribbon 3/8” – 5/8”
    • Ribbons of these widths are primarily known as “trim ribbon” or “narrows”.
    • Ideal for embellishing a gift, handmade card or use in a scrapbook project
    • Often used by florists in corsages and boutonnieres
  • Ribbon 7/8” – 1” – 1 ½”
    • Most common widths for packaging ribbon
    • Popular for embellishing gifts and creating multi-width bows
  • Ribbon 2” – 2 ½”
    • Most popular widths for home décor, including wreaths and garland
    • Also useful for embellishing gifts and bow making
  • Ribbon 4” and above
    • Trendy and found in upscale fabrics
    • Used for bow making, garland mantles, wreaths, chair ties, gift wrapping and more
    • Often used in floral designs
